Innovative learning
Most educational institutions are run on commercial basis. Besides,
there is parental demand to force-teach the child by conventional method
of rote-learning. The SCK is strongly opposed to rote-learning, and
absolutely opposed to use of force or threatening punishment. We rather
encourage child’s own initiative and instill interest in learning and
enquiry.
The child is encouraged to try and find a solution by its own efforts.
Correction is done by affirmative expression. The SCK’s philosophy is to
allow the child time to think and try to solve problems. A supervisory
assistant is provided in case help is needed. But the assistant is only
a helper, not “teacher” in this system. The SCK’s philosophy is to
encourage the child to apply her/ his mind and therefore the emphasis is
on showering praise, by pointing out to her/his originality and
initiative in doing things.
This basic method of allowing the child to participate in learning,
rather than sit and be at the receiving end, the SCK has helped to
inculcate confidence and spirit of freedom to enquire and excite the
young mind. In turn, quite often we the assistants have actually learned
new ways of doing things from the youngsters. Observing the child’s
behaviour is an extremely rewarding experience.
The SCK underlines the importance of learning: English and Hindi.
