Gandhi Jayanti in an English Prison
One day I got a call from the Indian High Commission that a Hindu priest
was required to visit an Indian serving long term sentence in an English
prison. As a Hindu (spiritual) Minister, I visited the prison to counsel
the young man. I presented a copy of Gandhi’s “My Experiment with Truth”
and made him in charge of the prison library. I organized Gandhi’s Birth
Day in Prison. On 2 October 1956(?) the prisoners had produced a journal
on Gandhi’s life and struggle with details of his trials and
imprisonment under the British Raj. I wanted to take out a copy of the
journal, which was not permitted under the Prison Rules. The Jail supt.
Invited me to his residential quarters for English tea. I was treated
with due courtesies and presented with a copy of the journal by Mrs.
Jailer.
